Gugu's notes

When I first played this scene in the DLC, I immediately knew I had to do this project. Having done a similar project a few years ago with a Goosebump’s choose-your-own-adventure book (that I had finished but never fully polished), I saw this project as a way to prove to myself that I can produce something similar and with dual purpose.

One purpose being to better understand Remedy's writing style, the other purpose being to better understand what exactly is happening in this story. I think I accomplished my goals, and now I'm making this project available online with the hopes that other fans can read, understand, and enjoy.

Partly inspired by Hunter S. Thompson's early career where he would type out work by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway in order to understand those authors' rhythms and writing styles, I want to understand Remedy's rhythms and writing styles (and the the aspects of writing specific to IF.)

I was curious about the different story directions this scene could have. And, since it took the form of an Interactive Fiction, I figured Twine would be a good tool to map it out!

I collected the initial story details from watching a AW2 EP3 playthrough on YouTube. But it quickly became apparent that I'd need to play through the narrative several times in order to get the full scope of the story.

All said and done, I recorded over 3 hours of play in order copy all possible paths. (A majority of that time was from accidentally leaving the screen recorder on while I was busy with other stuff, but hey: big number is big number.)

I started this process just a few days after the first Alan Wake 2 DLC was released, and in total it took me three or so weeks of working on-and-off to finish the project.

I did notice some small IF errors within the story. For example, down the Red-Haired-Woman path there can be a small issue where you are prompted a choice between running outside/opening the note, but no matter what you do, you open the note.

If you run into any other errors/misspelling or if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out on social media or email alejandro.ruizdelsol@gmail.com

I used Twine CSS Template (version 1.0) by Daniel Talsky to design the look and match it with what is found in-game. The typeface is called Press Start 2P from Google Fonts.
